The Precautionary Principle and the BioInitiative Report

The Precautionary Principle and the Bioinitiative Report.

By the early 1970s, the great forests of West Germany were dying. The Germans suspected the cause was industrial pollution that resulted from the tremendous post-Word War II economic growth. Eventually research studies would reveal the link between industrial pollution, acid rain, and deforestation. But in the face of potentially irreversible damage to an irreplaceable national treasure, the Germans decided to act before they had definitive proof by passing the groundbreaking Clean Air Act of 1974 to limit industrial emissions. In doing so, the Germans adopted a new approach to countering environmental risks. The subsequent decades have seen Vorsorgeprinzip (literally, the “precautionary principle”) become an underlying principle of German environmental legislation.

The Precautionary Principle instructs us that in the face of serious threats, a lack of scientific certainty never justifies inaction.

The BioInitiative Report (BIR) has its origins among members of the BioElectroMagnetics Society (BEMS), on which Martin Blank served as president in 2007. A year earlier a mini-symposium took place in 2006 with members of BEMS and from the scheduled talks and discussions, the key learnings were:

  • Safety standards built around protecting humans from thermal effects of EMF radiation completely fail to consider the many fundamental biological processes, well documented to be affected by EMF at nonthermal levels.
  • The energy thresholds for biological damage are very low, and so the thresholds for potentially negative health effects are probably also very low.
  • Simultaneous exposure to different frequency ranges could have additive effects on the exposed humans; similarly, effects of cumulative exposures must also be considered.

The spark set off at the symposium led the participants to form the BioInitiative Working Group that eventually organized the BioInitiative Report (BIR). The BIR (you can download it from here) reviewed a wide collection of scientific evidence obtained in connection with studies on RF/MW exposure (which are rapidly increasing). but also included studies of power-line ELF.

The Precautionary Principle and the BioInitiative Report is a proactive policy to protect citizens from potentially adverse environmental influences when information about the risks they present is incomplete.

The BIR was updated in 2012, and the Precautionary Principle still applies, although it is important to remember that the application of the Precautionary Principle is designed as an interim step – a stopgap measure. The risks of continued inaction are simply too great.

While many of continue to push for improved regulatory scrutiny of EMF emissions, you should not wait for such action.

There are steps you can and should take as an individual to minimize your exposure to potentially harmful EMF radiation, without going back to the stone age.

At Beneficial Environments we sell products that minimize such exposure.

We can perform an EMF survey of your home, office or clinic.

Getwired 2015: The Loss of Electromagnetic Innocence

Getwired 2015: The Loss of Electromagnetic Innocence

The recent GetWired2015 conference sponsored by Beneficial Environments was a response to concerns about the proliferation of wifi and mobile phone technologies.
The conference objective was to find and promote solutions to the problems arising both in terms of how to protect and shield vulnerable groups such as children and the aged but also how to encourage new safer products to be made available.   In contrast to many conferences focusing on the health effects, we have looked at solutions to the problem of widespread electrosensitivity and increasing electromagnetic pollution.
This is the first video release from Get Wired 2015.
Get Wired 2015 was organised in association with Stop Smart Meters! UK.
Professor Victor Newman, the conference chair, is an expert in motivating organisations to innovate.  He speaks about how new, safer technologies will become available to us all.  He sees that fashionable new products will play their part as the world adjusts to the new reality of lost electro-innocence.
We do hope you enjoy his talk about how organisations will respond to the need to reduce electromagnetic pollution.

Please feel free to share the video.

Electrosmog Survey

In this video Guy Hudson, physicist and electrosensitive talks about what Beneficial Environment does when they carry out an Electrosmog Survey.

We conduct surveys in homes and offices, in areas used for sleeping, working and resting. We check the levels of electromagnetic fields and compare them with those recommended by the Institute of Building Biology, Stetzer Electric and others.

It is a practical, tried-and-tested approach, based on well-established science and gaining from decades of experience of electromagnetic (EM) surveying.

The survey of a typical home (office and commercial premises will differ) will include (where appropriate and feasible) checks for :

  • radio/microwave fields (mobiles, cordless phones, wifi, cellmasts)
  • ‘dirty’ electricity (transient variations in the voltage and frequency of the mains)
  • earth live and neutral being connected
  • extra low frequency electric and magnetic fields
  • geomagnetic anomalies
  • geopathic stress
  • induced body voltages

We can recommend ways to for you to reduce your exposure to excessive pollution, while doing everything possible to retain full use of your electrical equipment.

As part of our professional approach to electromagnetic surveying, we hold professional indemnity insurance.

We also offer a design service to help establish an electrically calm and healthy environment in new buildings.

Electrohypersensitivity

In this video Guy Hudson, physicist and electosensitive talks about the many symptoms of electrohypersensitivity.

The major symptoms of electrohypersensitivity are tinnitus, headaches, cluster headaches, stomach disturbances, inguinal neuralgia, sleep problems, insomnia, tiredness, rashes, chronic fatigue syndrome, food and other allergies.

Notes on symptoms.

Accumulation: Cumulative exposure can produce symptoms, making symptoms from chronic exposure more difficult to recognize than from acute exposure.

Delay: Symptoms can be delayed after acute exposure for a few hours.

Diurnal State: Symptoms vary according to the diurnal state of a person’s body (which often declines during the day).

Duration: Individual symptoms can last for a short or long time.

Frequencies: The sufferer may react first to a single frequency or source but later to more.

Intensity: As the condition progresses the level of sensitivity can increase.

Ionizing Similarities: Studies indicate symptoms from exposure to EM (non-ionizing) radiation are similar to those from radioactive (ionizing) radiation.

Severe Reactions: Severe reactions include paralysis, convulsions, seizures, loss of consciousness and stroke, or they can exacerbate an existing medical condition.

At Beneficial Environments we have solutions to reduce your electromagnetic pollution which will alleviate and reduce the symptoms of electrohypersensitivity.

WiFi in Schools

This is a tragic story – a 15 year old girl in the UK committed suicide, possibly as a plea for help, after suffering from electrohypersensitivity (EHS) because of Wifi in schools. Click here for the full article in the Daily Telgraph

A mother claims a Wi-Fi allergy killed her daughter and is accusing an Oxfordshire school of failing to safeguard children against the physical effects of wireless technology, an inquest has heard.

Jenny Fry, 15, was found in woodland near her home in Chadlington, on June 11 this year after texting a friend telling her she would not be going to school and intended to kill herself.

An inquest heard the teenager was intelligent and organised but that her life had been made a misery due to the prolonged effects of a condition known as electro-hypersensitivity (EHS) .

It is also tragic because there are alternative solutions to having WiFi in schools.

Building Biologists have developed standards which minimize or prevent exposure to harmful EMFs.

These are standards Beneficial Environments endorse.

Jenny Fry didn’t appear to have the support of her GP in recognizing her condition, but some doctors such as Dr. Elizabeth Evans, in the UK do recognize the condition of EHS.

More information on WiFi in schools and GPs can be found at SSITA and an open letter from 15 UK GP’s expressing concern over the health effects of Wi-Fi

The World Health Organisation has classed WiFi (2b) as a possible human carcinogen.
